Petite tribu d’Indiens du Plateau, du groupe linguistique Shahaptin, les Umatilla vivaient sur les rives de la rivière Columbia, dans des villages temporaires dont la taille pouvait varier d’une région à l’autre. À la saison de la pêche, ils quittaient ces villages pour aller vivre dans des campements près des rivières à saumon, car ce poisson leur fournissait l’essentiel de leur nourriture; ils chassaient certains gibiers et cueillaient des racines et des fruits. On ne trouve aucune trace d’agriculture. Les Umatilla avaient des chefs locaux; la famille formait l’unité sociale fondamentale et le clan semblait inexistant dans leur organisation sociale. En 1885, ils signèrent un traité avec les États-Unis et s’installèrent dans la réserve umatilla en Oregon. Au début du XXe siècle, on évaluait leur nombre à environ deux cent cinquante personnes. Lors du recensement américain de 1990, ils étaient 1 160.
